Winning the war?

If you think the US is winning the war in Iraq, go here and click the red button. It gives a time-lapse history of coalition casualties, from which two basic facts are apparant: 1) the problems are almost completely in the area of Iraq occupied by US forces; there are very few deaths in the British sector, for example. And 2) things have got a lot worse recently. But what's most frightening is that there is no sign of this ever stopping or getting better. It's just going to go on and on and on until the US gives up and goes home, leaving a civil war in its wake - exactly as it did in Vietnam...

I think that when Saddam stopped ruling it was always going to be the countdown to civil war, no matter what. Even if Saddam hadn't been toppled by Bush, eventually his rule would have ended and I just don't think there was ever a neat succession to the next leader.

This of course does not excuse what Bush and co. did.

hasn't the US basically achieved its aims already?
I mean it won the war then it set itself another goal and set up a democracy

About time to declare victory and go home I would think. maybe just leave a bit of air support.
Still I think in one of your previous posts you said that they shouldnt go home and stay until iraq lets them go home? (or am I confusing you with someone else?)

Sadly, they ain't going anywhere, fast. Nor is Blair, or Howard, it seems fairly obvious that this is an op too good to miss for home patriotization...

Would that be the same "anti-American left" (your words, not mine) which kept countries like New Zealand and Canada out of the quagmire? Which limited active participants in the coalition of the willing to the US, the UK and a few of their client states?

I'm in the US at the moment, and to judge from talking to people, not to mention the number of flyposters up around Seattle, there are quite a few Americans who don't agree on Iraq.
