Back to the people?

The Solomon Islands opposition have tabled a motion to dissolve Parliament and hold further elections. This seems just a tad premature - generally, its traditional to try and form a government first, and while one attempt has failed (among rioting and resignation), its not clear that no other candidate can command a majority. It also smacks of the old tactic of repeating the vote until the voters make the "right" decision. I guess we just have to hope that they either find an acceptable PM, or that if it passes, it does so by such a margin as to be above claims of political partisanship.

Meanwhile, Fiji goes to the polls this weekend, amid claims of treason and terrorism between government and opposition, and the Prime Minister hinting darkly at another coup if he loses. It would be nice if they could have an election over there without the winner being forced from office by the army or a bunch of jumped-up thugs with guns, but I guess we'll just have to wait and see and hope for the best.
