Oh dear

Cuba has discovered oil. Quite a lot of it in fact, and US oil companies want a slice of the profits. The Washington Post is speculating on what this will mean for the 45-year old embargo , but given current US policies, I'm wondering how long it will be before Cuba is added to the "Axis of Evil" and Dick Cheney is claiming to have satellite photos of Osama bin Laden sunning himself on a Havana beach, right next to a pile of Saddam's WMDs...

Interesting article I/S, particularly the degree of completely naked self-interest which the perps obviously feel no shame about..
Like "I've always argued that we would keep the Cuban embargo in place until we got to the point where it started to cost us something." Today, he adds, "we're almost there."
What a nice attitude to fellow human beings.. they're there to be kicked until it starts to hurt us in some way..

One assumes that this is one of Gods' little jokes, like Queensland beaches where you can't swim because of the 'Stingers".
It is a good joke too, or would be if the White House wasn't so oil addicted.

"Quite a lot" meaning enough to supply the world's needs for 2-4 months, or just the US for about a year, give or take a few months. So, I guess we can all stop worrying about peak oil now, with huge new finds like that.

This is terrible news for the Cubans - they can expect a fate like that of Iraqis, Saudis and other people that live atop of oil.... they can expect Mr Blair declaring evidence of WMDs and Mr Bush demanding UNSC action, then invasion and finally internal chaos and war like in Baghdad...where news today is:

...Unknown attackers have kidnapped 25 people from the offices of the Iraqi-American Chamber of Commerce and Industry and al-Rawi mobile telephone company....More and more neighbourhoods are being carved up along sectarian lines in the capital, once a melting pot of Iraq's sects and ethnic groups. More and more shops and businesses are closing..."

No need to pressure; rumour suggests Fidel is poor health. If he goes it'll be red-rover for one of the last communist dictatorships.

With Fidel out of comission (albeit temporarily) and his brother Raul running the show, people in Washington are whispering about a "transition period" and what the US response would be.

Now the Helms-Burton law mentions Raul by name. However if Fidel were to shuffle off this mortal coil anytime soon there would be a lot of support on both sides of the aisle to either ammend H-B, or chuck it entirely.

However all this is academic as Castro has been close to death numerous times and has always sprung back.

Indeed,
it is just the good fortune of the anti cuba folks that florida is seen as a key seat.
