Party of bigotry watch

What is it with National and bigots? First, they put Steven "I love my dog, but that doesn’t mean I should be allowed to marry it" Franks up in Wellington Central. Then they open Nick Smith's campaign by channeling the sewer and repeatedly questioning Michael Cullen's sexuality (which is none of anyone else's business). Then there's this outburst from New Plymouth candidate Jonathan Young:

"One of my associates was an ex-lesbian," Young told the newspaper. "She discovered through her own journey and talking to others that a lot of things happened to her in her childhood that affected her deeply and caused her to become [homosexual].

"One of the things I do strongly object to in terms of the people who have made this choice is the presentation of it as a normal alternative," he concluded.

(Emphasis added)

These are attitudes which belong in the dark ages of the 50's and 60's, not in modern New Zealand. And yet they repeatedly find a home in the National Party. They really are the party of bigotry...
