An end to "abortion or deportation"?

Over the past few years I've blogged a couple of times about the government's policy of kicking out any visitor to New Zealand who becomes pregnant. This "abortion or deportation" policy is justified on the basis of preventing strain on our health services. But given that most of the people affected are required to have health insurance, this isn't much of a justification. Instead, we seem to have a government agency using any excuse to kick people out of the country - and in the process sending a message that New Zealand hates women.

Now, the government is reviewing the policy. Hopefully, this means it will be scrapped. It is clearly contrary to fundamental human rights, as well as common decency. You can't sack someone for being pregnant, so how the hell can it justify deportation?
