Fiji: A worrying sign

Back in January, Fiji's military regime promulgated draconian political party regulations aimed at eliminating that country's political parties. The re-registration period for existing parties ended last month, with only two applying, and today the outcome of their applications was supposed to be announced. But instead, the registrar Mere Vuniwaqa has suddenly resigned for "personal reasons".

So, is this a coincidence? Or did she resign after the military regime attempted to dictate her decision? Either way, if any party is denied registration, it is going to undermine the credibility of the decision. Which may be all she can do in a torturing military dictatorship.
